The Face of Holden: Freddie Bartholomew in  Captains Courageous  (1937)  
 In chapter 13 of  The Catcher in the Rye , when Holden is talking with a prostitute named Sunny, she says that Holden looks like the boy who fell off the boat in a movie she saw. 
 That movie, as identified by Peter Beidler in his book  A Reader’s Companion to J.D. Salinger’s “The Catcher in the Rye” , is   Captains Courageous   (1937) starring Spencer Tracy. 
 The boy who fell off the boat was played by child-actor Freddie Bartholomew. Based on the reference from the book, Bartholomew was Salinger’s model for Holden Caulfield.
